Awards galore and the wider curriculum

With the bank holiday this week, it has been an uphill battle trying to fit more in than usual. With that, comes many exciting learning experiences across the curriculum. The children have acted in English, learnt about the water cycle in Science, created surrealistic pastel pictures, used musical instruments, played rounders and learnt all about volcanoes to name but a few!

In English, the children have continued to learn about play scripts. First, they studied examples of these based on children’s books before acting them out using expression, body movements and stage directions. They then learnt how to change narrative into play script whilst also including adverbs to let the reader know how to say each line. The children have created alternative endings to the story ‘The Big Bad Pig and the Three Little Wolves.’ As you can imagine, this has been really fun! A big well done to Leo, Adelaide, Sam C, Beth WR, Matt, Dan and Sophie who had had their work on the wow wall. In addition, a huge congratulations goes to Millie K for being our most recent star writer!

In Maths, the children have continued their learning about decimals. They have compared, ordered and rounded these up to two decimals places. They have also learnt the equivalent decimals to ½, ¼ and ¾, which is necessary for any Year 4 pupil! Next week, they will deepen their learning of decimal notation by learning about money.

It’s been fascinating learning about volcanoes over the past two weeks, especially with Hawaii’s most active volcano, Kilauea, erupting throughout the week. The children have learnt about the features of a volcano and can now explain how they explode. They’ve used the terms, active, dormant and extinct to explain whether they are a danger to the public and environment or not.

The children have learnt about the surrealist painter Rene Magritte noticing that he changed the shape of objects that made the viewer really think. With this, the class were tasked with sketching a large eye and then with a reflection of a volcanic eruption in the lens. They did this using chalk so colours blended. Photos are on the website and these will be finished in due course!

In Science, the children have been learning about the water cycle with the processes of condensation, evaporation & transpiration. They did a scientific investigate which you can learn more about by looking at the photos on our class webpage.

A huge well done to our star players in P.E – Shilah and Beth WR (Rounders) and Amy, Robyn and Isabelle (bench ball) it is great to see improvements from the children and should give them a spur on in the future too!

A big well done to last week’s star pupil, Leo for participating brilliantly in lessons and to Emma who is always focused and has a super work ethic!

We are very proud to announce that Alfie HD was the latest recipient of the Ellie Williams Superstar Award alongside Lexi in Year 1 for being such an all-round hard working, determined, friendly, helpful individual who always strives to do his very best. He is a pleasure to teach and muchly deserved the award. Well done!

Two weeks left of the half term with Year 6 & 2 doing their SATs next week – it will be another interesting one with Mr Lugg back, green screening continuing and a trip on the 22nd May to Shelter box in Truro (letters have already been sent home in planners!)

Have a great weekend all – Eurovision is on Saturday night so join in the manic fun 😉 Here’s to Nil points!
