Camp & Pizza Making

Well it’s been a great start to the summer term. If last week wasn’t busy enough then this week certainly lived up to expectations! Delaware camp was an unforgettable experience for the children and I think that all of them enjoyed the 3 days away. Taking part in the four different activities of mountain biking, moorland walk, canoeing and indoor climbing, they conquered fears, challenged themselves and did themselves proud! It’s a huge ordeal for some children to be away from their parents but all in all, they coped brilliantly and made the most out of every opportunity. We hope each and every member of Gwithian class had a fantastic time and that memories will stay with them forever. A HUGE thank you to my friends and colleagues who without, the camp could not have happened. Cheers to Miss Rowe, Mrs Ballard, Mrs Greygoose, Mrs Izzard and Miss Brant! No doubt, everyone will be very sleepy over the weekend.
We will be gathering in all of the photos to put online for your perusal during the week so stay tuned!
Last week, the children were incredibly fortunate to have three dedicated parents who came in to create pizzas with them. Tamsin, Nessie and Mel came in the morning and the children created their dough. During the afternoon, they rolled this out and put it into the burning outdoor pizza oven before placing delicious toppings and re-firing. By all accounts, the food was absolutely scrumptious, and the children have the best time! We really could not have done this without the help of the parents…we are truly grateful! Pictures are online to view.
So has all of this fun stopped the children from learning other things? Of course not! In Maths, the children have been deepening their learning of decimals by furthering their understanding of the place value of digits as well as using different resources to help divide whole numbers by 10 and 100. Next week, they will learn how to compare, order and round decimal numbers.
In English, the children have been learning about prepositions to strengthen their grammar knowledge. Their Big Write Ode poetry was excellent and I was really proud of how much they had used the language and structural features learnt from before Easter. Millie K, Shilah, Alfie and Oscar S did a super job and got themselves displayed on the wow wall. During camp, the children have been writing recounts in order to create a Delaware diary that can be taken home and cherished. It’s one of those things that I hope will get stored in the attic in years to come and open a decade later for them to say ‘Wow, do you remember that? Look at my handwriting!’ We’ve all been there with school books, right?
We welcomed Mr Lugg to the team last week who is a trainee teacher in the final term of his course. When he completes this, he will be a qualified teacher so it’s a big honour yet pressure to help someone with their career. Although he is not back until 14th May, Jack will be teaching a lot until the end of the summer term. Feel free to have a chat with him if you see him in the playground – it’s all good experience!
This term is all about Natural disasters which is a great way to end the year. We’re hoping to pack in lots of great experiences for the children including a trip the Shelter box centre in Truro in the near future. Be prepared for a letter about this soon.
A huge well done to Milly W who became last term’s photography champion. We’re hoping to have another competition this term but unsure what to base it on so watch this space.
Congratulations to Shilah, Dan and Sam C who were the star pupils of their respective groups at camp for not making any fuss, helping out and trying their hardest throughout their time at Delaware. Well done lads.
Here’s to the rest of our final term!
Have a great weekend,
Mr L
